Breathable Films

Breathable films play a vital role in hygiene products like diapers and sanitary pads, helping regulate moisture and maintain comfort. Their performance depends on the permeability which is closely linked to the microscopic structure within the material.

Advanced Imaging for Smarter Hygiene Products

To better understand and optimise the performance of breathable films, we utilise Focused Ion Beam Scanning Electron Microscopy (FIB-SEM), a high-resolution imaging technique that enables detailed three-dimensional reconstruction of the film’s internal microstructure. This method works by sequentially milling away ultra-thin layers of the material and capturing images at each step.

The resulting 3D dataset can be segmented to create a binary structure for simulating gas transport and other key properties. Further image analysis of the 3D data can provide valuable information about porosity, connectivity, tortuosity, pore shape and pore size distribution, all of which influence how the product performs in real-world use.
